Wonderings at the Beach

Wonderings at the Beach

By Mary Ellen Johnson

Salt licks my face
As I plunge into the sea,
Churning waves race to shore
Alive, in wild abandon, ruthless and free.

What tales could the ripples tell
Of adventures far and near,
Places you’ve been?
If only my ears could hear.

What creatures have been birthed
In your watery embrace,
What horrid deeds have you tossed
In abandoned disgrace?

I came to the sea
To the rolling shore,
To see the stark beauty,
To quench a thirst for more.

More sea, more sand, more sky,
I am a child of the sea,
Sand under my toes my delight,
Vistas as far as the eye can see.

The heavens roll into the sea,
Clouds scuttle through the cerulean blue,
Waves crest and crash into shore,
And my body and mind can rest and renew.
